Senior Associate Director of Development


POSITION

Uncommmon Schools (Uncommon) is seeking a Senior Associate Director of Development to join the organization’s fundraising and development operations. Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, and working closely with other members of the Uncommon Schools team, the Senior Associate Director of Development will be responsible for executing activities associated with identifying, securing, nurturing, and engaging existing and new individual, corporate, and institutional donors. The Senior Associate Director will help define and implement the development strategy for one or more Uncommon regions and lead, manage, cultivate, and steward a portfolio of donor relationships and associated fundraising-related activities (e.g. data management, events, etc.) for those regions.


The Senior Associate Director of Development, with support and guidance from the Senior Director of Development, will be responsible for raising the private philanthropy necessary to: 1) start and scale a fast growing and high performing network of public charter schools; 2) acquire, build, and renovate state-of-the-art school facilities; and 3) implement key organizational initiatives in one or more Uncommon regions, as well as the Uncommon Home Office (central office). The Senior Associate Director will be joining a team that supports the development needs of Uncommon’s 49 (and growing) network of schools and the Home Office.


Development Team Overview:
The Development Team is responsible for cultivating and stewarding relationships with individuals, corporations, foundations, and government entities with the goal of raising and sustaining philanthropic support necessary to support existing schools and open new schools to meet growing demand. The team regularly undertakes both capital and operating campaigns across multiple regions and as an organization, Uncommon has a long and extensive track record of fundraising success with many tenured and repeat donors.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The position requires a high-energy, smart, detail-oriented, hard-working leader who can contribute to and support the strategic vision, execute on operations and systems building, and build deep and lasting relationships with both donors and other Development team members. Candidates will be team players who are responsive to the organization’s evolving needs and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure team and organizational success. 



Initiatives on which the Senior Associate Director may work include but are not limited to:
1) Developing and implementing a strategic plan to raise private operating philanthropy for Uncommon schools in particular regions as they track toward sustainability on the public dollar.
2) Developing, sourcing, launching, and tracking progress on major capital campaigns in select regions, with guidance from the Senior Director, including the development of a campaign case and corresponding materials, and solicitation of lead donors, major donors, and board members.
3) Raising philanthropy for key special projects and campaigns that will drive innovation across the organization.
4) Implementing use of Salesforce, an online data/donor management system, for all key donor interactions and updates in order to drive reporting and decision making for new and expected gifts/donors across the Senior Associate Director’s portfolio of donors.
5) Designing and/or implementing transactional systems and processes to maximize the efficiency and efficacy of the Development team.
6) Identifying, cultivating, and stewarding development prospects (institutional, individual, corporate) within select Uncommon regions.
7) Developing and implementing events to engage current and future donors in work; working closely with school leaders in each region to ensure development activities accurately reflect school priorities without putting undue burden on school staff.
8) Ensuring prompt and accurate communication with all donors in the Senior Associate Director’s portfolio; holds primary responsibility for meeting all grant requirements including grant contract review and execution, tracking contract milestones, and completing grant reports.
9) Processing and allocating grants with the Finance team and ensuring fidelity to existing and/or building of new systems and procedures to ensure accuracy and accountability on these issues.
10) Performing other related duties as required and assigned. 



QUALIFICATIONS 

• Strong commitment to the organizational mission.
• A bachelor’s degree.
• 4-7 years of substantive work experience with increasing responsibility in non-profit development and/or education; extensive experience in development, fundraising, and donor or grants management is ideal.
• Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to move and communicate seamlessly and effectively among and between varied audiences (e.g. donors/foundations, board members, school leaders, team members, Uncommon Executive Team members, etc.).
• Presence and poise in both group and one-on-one settings.
• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Commitment to tracking donor data and using data to drive decision making.
• Very strong organizational skills; an obsessive attention to detail and follow-through.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment; flexible; able to work autonomously as well as take direction as needed.
