Two-Year Instructional Fellowship

POSITION
Each year, Uncommon identifies and selects highly qualified leaders to participate in Uncommon’s Principal (Instructional) Fellowship. The fellowship prepares rising principals to both found and sustain great schools within the Uncommon network.  As we plan for the future, we have identified the need for a Two Year Fellowship program

While both Instructional Fellowships (1 and 2 year) prepare Fellows for the impressive feat of running an outstanding school, our Two Year Fellowship allocates an additional year to the fundamentals of outstanding instructional leadership, including:
  • Instruction: Fellows will master core Teach Like a Champion techniques and build their proficiency in Guided Reading and Math instruction  
  • Data Analysis: Fellows will effectively analyze informal and formal classroom data, reflect on this data, and use this information to drive instruction
  • Observation and Feedback:  Fellows will coach at least one teacher to improve by learning to quickly identify the highest leverage action step and providing clear, actionable feedback
The second year of the Fellowship will be similar to our current One Year Instructional Fellowship, and will enhance Fellows’ ability to:
  • Execute Instruction: During instruction, Fellows will be able to identify student misunderstandings and coach teachers to adjust questioning to ensure that students have a deep understanding of academic content
  • Lead Student Culture: Fellows will learn to cultivate and maintain at least one aspect of student culture (e.g., morning meeting, in-class discipline) that maximizes student achievement
  • Build Staff Culture:  Fellows will also learn how to attract and retain a strong team
Fellows will also continue to focus on:
  • Instruction: Fellows will build content knowledge about Common Core and support planning/revisions to a select K-4 curriculum content area
  • Data Analysis: Fellows will analyze grade level data at a high level and create a concrete action plan to respond to student data across a select grade level
  • Observation and Feedback: Fellows will coach a team of teachers to improve learning by being able to quickly identify the highest leverage action steps and convey this feedback using the Six Steps of Effective Feedback
The fellowship provides a robust development process to prepare leaders to lead a school as Principal in conjunction with the Director of Operations.  This Fellow and eventual Principal is a full-time employee, hired, supported, and evaluated by the Assistant Superintendent.  The Instructional Fellow must have a B.A. and a minimum of three years of teaching experience.

Evaluation and Feedback
Throughout the fellowship year, Fellows will receive coaching and feedback from their Associate Managing Directors in addition to the school leaders they are working closely with during their fellowship year. Each Fellow will have an Individual Development Plan that identifies the specific areas of development for the Fellow around which the fellowship will be customized to ensure focused development opportunities.

Minimum Education Level
  • The Instructional Fellow must have a Bachelor’s degree.
Experience Required
  • 4 or more years of teaching experience highly preferred;
  • 1 or more years of experience coaching or leading teachers (e.g., grade level chair, content/department chair, Assistant Principal, Dean of Curriculum, etc.) highly preferred.

COMPENSATION
